Set at the beginning of the 20th century, Hello, Dolly! is centered on a middle-aged matchmaking widow named Dolly Levi and an ensemble of characters who are desperately searching for love in New York City. The 2-act musical follows Dolly herself, the well-known half-millionaire Horace Vandergelder, his niece Ermengarde, her painter paramour Ambrose Kemper, Vandergelders Hay & Feed store clerks Cornelius Hackl and Barnaby Tucker, and milliners Irene Molloy and Minnie Fay, in their quest to find romance.
Hello, Dolly! is based on Thornton Wilders 1933 farce The Merchant of Yonkers. The musical premiered in Broadway in 1964 and won 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The original cast recording of Hello, Dolly! was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2002, while the performance itself enjoyed 3 Broadway revivals and international success.
