First published in 1900, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz follows the story of Dorothy Gale and her dog, Toto, who are caught in a tornado and get lost in the mystical land of Oz. Along the way, Dorothy meets new friends, namely a Scarecrow who wants a brain, a Tin Man who wants a heart, and a Cowardly Lion who is in desperate need of courage. Wishing to go home herself, Dorothy goes on a quest with her friends to find the Wizard of Oz, whom they heard can grant their wishes.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was adapted into a musical fantasy film by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer almost four decades later in 1939. The Wizard of Oz, which starred Judy Garland, went on to become a critical and commercial success, winning two Academy Awards and earning $22.34 million dollars in the box office.

In 1987, The Wizard of Oz, a musical adaptation of the book and film, was first staged. This musical, with a book by John Kane, music by Harold Aren, and lyrics by E.Y Harburg, has since become the most popular theatrical adaptation of Baum’s work.
