Or how about the intense scene where Pinocchio battles the horrifying Monstro with our stormy sea and undersea-themed backgrounds? The first account of Pinocchio came from the mind of the Italian writer Carlo Collodi, who wrote about the character in his childrens novel entitled The Adventures of Pinocchio. Originally a newspaper serial published between 1881 and 1882, it was completed and published as childrens book in February 1883. Today, the original Pinocchio story is considered as an iconic piece childrens literature. The Adventures of Pinocchio tells the story of a woodcarver named Geppetto, who was given a talking piece of wood by his neighbor. With his gentle hand, he carved the block into a marionette, which he later named Pinocchio. Once completed, the magical talking marionette jumped out of his fathers hands and began his misadventures all throughout Italy. Disneys classic animated film version of the story came out in 1940 and became the second feature length film, after Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, to be entirely hand drawn. Simply called Pinocchio, the film had elements that were similar to Collodis novel, but instead of being mischievous, Disneys Pinocchio had to prove to himself that he was brave, truthful, and unselfish in order to become a real boy. Needless to say, this animated classic was beloved by many and garnered $84.2 million at the box office. The film has since inspired a number of other versions, including an anime in 1972 and a musical film in 1976.
