Call Me Madam is centered on the character of one Sally Adams, an exuberant widow who serves as the Madam Ambassadress of the United States to the fictional Grand Duchy of Lichtenburg. Displaying a complete lack of knowledge on protocol, she arrives late to a meeting with foreign minister Cosmo Constantine. She also supports a scheme that will have Cosmo replaced with a foreign minister who is more willing to accept aid from the US. The plan, however, backfires, and Sally Adams uses every chance she can get to make amends for her earlier mistakes.

The music and lyrics of Call Me Madam were by Irving Berlin, while the book was written by Howard Lindsay and Russell Crouse. The satirical musical spoofs Americas penchant for lending large amounts of money to countries in need. The production opened on Broadway in 1950, was staged in West End in 1952, and has won four Tony Awards and a World Theater Award.
