Written by Isobel Lennart and featuring the music of Jule Styne and the lyrics of Bob Merrill, Funny Girl is based on the life and career of Broadway star and comedienne Fanny Brice and her turbulent relationship with the famous gambler Nick Arnstein. The musical opened at the Winter Garden Theatre in Broadway in 1964 and ran for 1,348 performances. It was nominated for eight Tony Awards.

Funny Girl begins in New Yorks Lower East Side when Fanny is just a stage-struck teenage girl. Working in a vaudeville theatre, she often finds herself daydreaming about being a star herself. However, her mother and neighbors try to dissuade her from joining show business because they say she just isnt pretty enough. But Fanny perseveres, knowing that she has the will and the talent to make it big.

Eventually, Fannys career does take off, and she meets Nick Arnstein, a handsome and captivating gambler. They fall in love and tie the knot when Nick wins big in a game, afterwards moving to a mansion in Long Island. Despite their love for each other, however, the couple encounters problems along the way. It all comes to a head when Nick gets involved in a shady Wall Street bond deal that results in him getting arrested for embezzlement. He is eventually released, but the couple decides to separate. Fannys heart is broken, but she promises herself that someday, somehow, better things are waiting for her.
