Pippin is a Tony Award-winning musical famous for breaking the fourth wall with wild abandon. Its lead characters, the members of a mysterious performance troupe, portray the story of Pippin, a prince looking for existential fulfillment and searching for his father, Charlemagne. Throughout the performance, the troupes Leading Player speaks directly to the audience to create a distancing effect and gives Pippin suggestions as to how he may find his purpose and happiness in life.

Pippin made its debut at the Imperial Theater on Broadway on October 23, 1972. Its original run won 4 of its 11 Tony Award nominations and all 4 of its Drama Desk Award nominations. After Broadway, the musical was transferred to Her Majesty's Theatre in West End on October 30, 1973. These productions were both directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse. Pippins 2013 revival was likewise met with much success, earning several Tony Awards, Drama League Awards, Outer Critics Circle Awards, Drama Desk Awards, and a number of other distinctions.
