First published in 1837 by the famed Danish storyteller Hans Christian Andersen, The Little Mermaid is about a young mermaid and her quest to become human and to gain an immortal soul. Since then, the story has been adapted into films, theatrical presentations, television shows, and comic strips in different languages.

In 1989, The Walt Disney Company released an animated movie, also called The Little Mermaid, based on the story, which spurred a string of stage musicals in Broadway and a number of local and international productions.

In the popular version of the musical, King Tritons youngest daughter, Ariel, cultivates her curiosity of the human world. Venturing out to the ocean surface one night, the young mermaid saves the life of Prince Eric, falls in love with him, and vows to find a way to join the human prince in his world.
