Beauty and the Beast is a tale about a love that blossoms between a beautiful woman and a ferocious beast, who is actually a prince cursed by a fairy because he was cold of heart.

While the best-known version of the fairy tale is arguably Disneys 1991 interpretation, Beauty and the Beasts history actually dates back to the mid-18th century. It was first written by French author Gabriell-Suzanne de Villenueve, who had it published in 1740 under the title La Belle et la Bte (Beauty and the Beast). The original was condensed and rewritten by Jeannne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont, who published the new version in 1756.

In 1991, Disney produced an animated film also called Beauty and the Beast. In 1994, the musical version of this Academy Award-winning masterpiece debuted on Broadway. Both the film and musical feature the now iconic music of composer Alan Menken.
