Another work by the legendary team of Rodgers and Hammerstein, South Pacific is a popular Broadway production that has been met with critical and commercial success since it was first staged in 1949. The musical was based on a combination of several tales from James A. Michener's Pulitzer Prize-winning 1947 book called Tales of the South Pacific. The production won 10 Tony Awards and remains to be the only production that has won in all 4 acting categories. The 2008 Broadway revival of South Pacific was likewise favorably well-received by the critics and won several awards.

Tackling racial prejudice was one of the reasons why Rodgers and Hammerstein took to writing the musical. South Pacific is set in a South Pacific island during World War II and revolves around an American nurse who has trouble accepting the mixed-race children of a middle-aged expatriate French plantation owner. In addition to their love affair, the musical also sheds light on the romance that develops between a U.S. lieutenant and a young Tonkinese woman.
