Once on This Island is a musical with music by Stephen Flaherty and a book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens. Adapted from the book My Love, My Love; or The Peasant Girl written by Rosa Guy, the musical is a poignant tale about Ti Moun, a poor island girl who rescues and falls in love with Daniel, a wealthy grande home who is a descendant of the archipelagos French plantation barons and their workers. Unknown to Ti Moun, her meeting with Daniel was arranged by the capricious gods of the island, one of whom proposes a bet so that they can all find out which is stronger: love or death. At stake is the life of Ti Moun herself. In the end, Ti Mouns capacity to love is overwhelmed by the powerful forces of hatred, prejudice, and death. However, the gods turn her body into a tree, which becomes a symbol of life and love whose roots ultimately destroy the wall that separates the rich and the poor. Interested in Projected Backdrops?
