Hansel and Gretel

Create a production of Hansel and Gretel that is as enticing as a gingerbread cottage. Grosh Backdrops and Drapery offers the finest stage backdrops, curtains, and drapes to turn your show into a truly delightful treat for your audience. We offer a variety of backdrop designs depicting themes from the classic Germanic tale popularized by the Brothers Grimm in the early 19th century. We have panels showing a cottage exterior and interior, a kitchen, forests, dungeons, and various confectionery-themed backdrops. Even before the fairy tale was recorded and published by the Brothers Grimm in 1812, Hansel and Gretel was already a well-known story of German origin that had been passed on through oral tradition. The rather sinister tale is believed to have originated in the Medieval Ages during the Great Famine (1315 to 1317), a period when many people were forced to abandon their children in the woods and sometimes even resorted to cannibalism. The story tells of a brother and sister who are kidnapped by a cannibalistic sorceress. After being lost in the woods for days, Hansel and Gretel discover a clearing where there is a cottage made of gingerbread, cake, and candy. Because of their hunger, they begin to eat the hut. From inside, an old hag emerges and entices the children with the promise of beds for the night and warm food to fill their tummies. The siblings later find out that the hag is actually a witch. She enslaves Gretel and locks Hansel in a cage so that she can force-feed and fatten the boy before eating him. The story goes that after weeks of trying but failing to fatten Hansel, the witch finally decides to eat both of the children. She tries to trick Gretel into leaning over the oven, but the girl outsmarts her by having her demonstrate what she wants the girl to do. In the end, Gretel is the one to shove the witch into the oven, killing her in the process.
