A romantic ballet in two acts, Giselle premiered in June 1841 at the Ballet du Théâtre de l’Académie Royale de Musique in Paris, France. Featuring a libretto by Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges and Théophile Gautier, the music of Adolphe Adam, and the choreography of Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot, the original Giselle production headlined the Italian ballerina Carlotta Grisi, who played the eponymous leading character in the ballet. Giselle was highly successful, and was staged in locations across Europe and the United States.

The story revolves around Giselle, a peasant girl who meets a nobleman named Albrecht. She falls in love with the man and accepts his offer to marry him, unaware of the fact that he is already betrothed to another woman, the daughter of the Duke. However, it doesn’t take long before Giselle learns of Albrecht’s status. Heartbroken and weak, Giselle loses her mind and dies.
