Summer 1958, Australia. 

Sandy and Danny share a short-lived but exciting romance during his vacation trip to Australia. Sandy fears for the end of their love story, but Danny reassures her that it’s just the beginning.

Back home, Danny starts his life as a Rydell High School senior and resumes his role as leader of the T-Birds greaser gang with his friends. Sandy has unexpectedly travelled to America and enrolled in Rydell High School. She meets the Pink Ladies. Both Sandy and Danny retell the story of their summer romance, with Sandy rejoicing in the tenderness while Danny tells a more physical experience. After some denial, Sandy finally reveals Danny’s name, and Rizzo, the Pink Ladies’ leader, proposes they reconnect at the pep rally.

At the pep rally, Sandy meets Tom, a jock, and encounters Kenickie, Danny’s best friend, who proudly shows off his new used car, Greased Lightning, which he intends to use for street racing. Danny and Sandy meet again, but despite his feelings, he feels pressured to maintain a bad boy image and brushes her off.

Later that night, the Pink Ladies throw a slumber party. Sandy falls ill due to trying cigarettes, alcohol, and piercing her ears. Rizzo heads off to be with her boyfriend, Kenickie, but they are interrupted by Leo and Cha-Cha, who are the leaders of the rival gang.

Sandy knows she is still in love with Danny, and after reflecting on his mistakes, apologizes and manages to win her back from Tom. They go on a date but are interrupted by their friends. Kenicke and Rizzo fight and break up.

During the school dance, which is hosted by DJ Vince Fontaine and broadcast live on television, Rizzo and Kenickie arrive with Leo and Cha-Cha to spite one another. Sandy and Danny attend together and put on a show that gets them the lead to win the hind-jive contest; however, Sonny, one of Danny’s friends, pulls Sandy away, and Cha-Cha cuts in just in time to win with Danny.

Danny plans to make it up to Sandy by taking her to the drive-in theater, but after he tries to make some uninvited advances, she storms off. Rizzo suspects she might be pregnant, but denies it to Kenickie when he finds out over a rumour.

The day of the race, Keninkie of the truck by the car’s door, and Danny must take the wheel. After a brilliant performance, he wins, and Sandy realizes she is still in love with him. She asks Frenchy for help to do a full makeover so she can win him back. 

On the last day of school, Sandy shows up with her new look, impressing Danny, who also admits she has changed him. Rizzo finds out she is not pregnant and reconciles with Kenickie. At the end, Sandy and Danny rekindle the spark and take off on the Greased Lightning to new adventures together.
