The King and I, the fifth work from the legendary team of composer Richard Rodgers and dramatist Oscar Hammerstein II, was based on a 1944 novel by Margaret Langdon. The novel, Anna and the King of Siam, was a fictionalized version of the life of Anna Leonowens who has served as a governess to the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the 1860s. The King and I premiered on Broadway on March 29, 1951, and ran for nearly 3 years. A popular title among the theatergoing crowd, the production had many revivals and tours.

The King and I revolves around the character Anna Leonowens, a governess to the wives and children of The King of Siam. Coming from different cultural and social backgrounds, Anna and the king frequently find themselves of different opinions on issues like slavery and polygamy, and even Annas stay in the royal residence. At the same time, the king is also facing the threat of political intervention from other countries.
