The first musical brought forth by the legendary composer-librettist team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, Oklahoma! opened as a box-office smash in 1943 and was performed for a total of 2,212 times on its first run, which lasted for 5 years. Staged before the Tony Awards came into existence, the productions debut was instead met with unprecedented commercial and critical success. Over the years, though, Oklahoma! won and earned nominations for Theater World Awards, Tony Awards, Olivier Awards, Drama Desk Awards, Critics' Circle Theatre Awards, and Evening Standard Award.

The musical Oklahoma! was based on a 1931 play called Green Grow the Lilacs by Lynn Riggs. Set in 1906s Oklahoma Territory, the theatrical production follows the romance of cowboy Curly McLain and farm girl Laurey Williams. In addition to the main couple, the play also features Will Parker and his fiance Ado Annie, the mysterious Jud Fry, a Persian peddler named Ali Hakim, and various community elders and young people.
