Join the ups and downs of Tevye and his family!
Tevye is a Jewish milkman living in Anatevka, Russia. He lives with his wife, Golde, and their five daughters, whom he wishes to marry off but cannot afford a dowry. Tevye’s life, as well as the lives of the Jewish community, are difficult, comparable to the work of a fiddler on a roof who continues to play lovely harmonies as they try simultaneously not to break their necks.
Despite his hard work, Tevye remains poor and fearful of the future. One day, Tevye meets Perchik, a young man with modern ideas. In exchange for housing, Tevye proposes that Perchik should tutor his daughters. In the meantime, he also manages to arrange the marriage of his eldest daughter to an affluent butcher called Lazar Wolf. However, his daughter remains in love with her childhood sweetheart and begs her father to let her marry him. Due to his love for his daughter, he agrees and persuades Golde to allow the union.
Tevye and his family celebrate the engagement, but are quickly shut down by warnings that the locals will attack. At the wedding, the guests argue about whether or not a girl should be allowed to choose her husband. Perchik tells the crowd that couples should make their own decisions. He asks Hodel, one of Tevye’s daughters, to dance with him. As the guests relax and enjoy the party, a group of locals crashes the wedding, ending their celebration.
Perchik decides to join the revolution, not before telling Hodel he is in love with her and wants to marry her. Hodel begs her father to let her marry him, however, he is unsure, as Perchik will leave Anatevka. Ultimately, he agrees to their marriage.
Tevye’s third daughter, Chava, has also fallen in love with a young Russian man named Fyedka. When she asks her father to let her marry him, he disagrees immediately as it would mean she abandons the Jewish faith. Despite her father’s disagreement, Chava and Fyedka marry each other in a Russian Orthodox Church, which results in Chava being disowned and rejected by her father.
Sometime later, the community of Anatevka is informed that the Russian government is now forcing the Jews to leave and settle elsewhere, which prompts Tevye’s family and friends to head to different locations across the globe. Before they leave, Chava and Fyedka come to let her family know that she and her husband will be moving to Poland, but Tyvye is not interested in talking to her. Nevertheless, when Goldie says goodbye to her daughter, he repeats the blessing. Right as Tevye and his family are leaving, the fiddler on the roof joins them to walk down the road together.
