During New Year’s Eve, high school student Troy Bolton has been spending quality time with his family at a ski lodge in Utah. Everything changes when he is called up to do a karaoke duet with Gabriella Montez and they share a moment of true connection.
Back at his home in New Mexico, Troy is captain of the basketball team at East High School, which his father also coaches. He is surprised that Gabriella has also transferred to his high school and shows her around. When at the drama club, they meet Sharpay Evans, the president and passionate theatre enthusiast, who asks Gabriella if she wants to participate in this year’s presentation. Sharpay becomes jealous of Gabriella, uncovers her past academic achievements, and informs the decathlon captain so they can appoint her to their team.
Troy and Gabriella start spending more time together. One day, as they watch Sharpay and her twin brother Ryan audition for the play, they accidentally step forward and audition for the play. When the callback list is published, Sharpay is shocked to find Troy and Gabriella’s names in it. The basketball and decathlon teams are shocked to find their stars on the list.
The basketball team confronts Troy about his new passion, only to find out that he is eager to participate in the play. Troy’s best friend and the president of the decathlon team work together to sabotage Troy’s and Gabriella’s relationship. After overhearing Gabriella and Troy auditioning, Sharpay convinces the drama club teacher to reschedule the callback to coincide with Troy’s championship and Gabriella’s decathlon. However, with their friend’s support, they can make it in time for the callback and perform their number, landing the roles they wanted.
After the audition, Gabriella and Troy become sincere about their feelings and start a relationship, now aware that they can pursue all their passions with their families’ and friends’ support.
