Shrek is a lonely and grumpy ogre who lives isolated from the world in a retired swamp. He spends his days happily showering in the mud and having odd things for dinner. His life takes a weird turn when some fairytale creatures show up at his doorstep. He is then told that Lord Farquaad, who is in line to become king of the land, has been displacing these creatures who have ended up in the swamp.
Shrek travels to (some place) to confront Lord Farquaad and recover his life. On the way there, he meets Donkey, a talkative donkey who keeps him company to his dismay. Together they get involved in a town brawl organized for the ruler’s entertainment, and through his sheer strength, impress the Lord.
He then has a private meeting with them, in which he reveals that he is looking for a wife and has chosen Fiona, a princess being held captive in a dragon’s lair. Lord Farquaad proposes that he will remove all the invaders from his swamp if they manage to bring Princess Fiona to him alive. Shrek agrees, and Donkey follows him.
They travel to the feared dragon’s lair, surpassing several challenges along the way, only to be met with the biggest challenge of their journey, the dragon itself. Shrek crafts a plan that involves him going for the princess while Donkey distracts the dragon. He goes off to find Fina and Donkey stays behind, terrified of the dragon.
Shrek arrives at Princess Fiona’s room, where their personalities seem to clash, regardless, he insists on rescuing the princess and taking her to the man who will be her husband. In the meantime, Donkey comes face to face with the imposing dragon who, in a turn of events, ends up falling for him. After reuniting with Srek and no longer fearing the dragon, they escape the cave and embark on a journey back to Lord Farquaad.
On their way there, they begin to know each other. While crossing the woods, they end up being ambushed by Robin Hood, and rescued by Fiona who reveals she is a talented martial arts artist, but a lousy cook and singer.
One night, while they are all asleep, Donkey realizes that Fiona is missing and goes out to look for her. To his surprise. He ends up finding an ogre and believes she ate Fiona but is reassured that the ogre he just met is the princess, who has been cursed to turn into an ogre every night until she finds true love. Donkey promises to keep this secret from Shrek and continue their path to their destination.
As they continue their adventure, Shrek and Fiona bond and become more understanding of one another. Eventually, they both admit to these feelings, but after learning about her curse, he understands that for her to be the person she wants to be, she has to marry Lord Farquaad.
When they finally arrive at their destination, Fiona is presented to Lord Farquaad, who keeps true to his promise, returns Shrek to his swamp, and removes all the intruders. When Donkey confronts him about his feelings for Fiona, Shrek dismisses him and returns to his old life. But after reflecting, he decides to go after Fiona and confess to her.
Just when she is about to marry the Lord, Shrek interrupts the scene and confesses his true love to Fiona, much to Lord Farquaad’s dismay, who tries to prevent them from coming together but it’s eaten by the dragon, who is now partnering with Donkey.
Once Lord Farquaad is gone, Fiona and Srek embrace one another and get married, as they prepare to live ugly ever after.
