Maria is a young, lively, free-spirited Austrian woman studying to become a nun. Mother Abbess, who is not overly impressed with her lack of discipline, sends her to the villa of retired naval officer Captain Georg von Trapp to take care of his seven children. Orphans of their mother, all these children have known for most of their life is the military strictness imposed by their father, and have scared away several governesses in the past. However, Maria responds to every trick with kindness and playfulness, which helps the kids warm up to her.
As soon as the Captain leaves for Viena, Maria makes clothes for the kids and takes them to the mountains. She teaches them how to sing and lets them play freely. When the Captain comes back, accompanied by the Baroness Elsa Schreader and Max Detweiler. After seeing how his children have spent their time during his absence, he attempts to fire Maria but changes his mind when he sees his children singing for the Baroness
After spectating the children’s spectacle, Max proposes they join the Salzburg Festival, but the Captain refuses. Nonetheless, he lets Maria stay and allows his children to enjoy their new activities. As time goes by, the Captain and Maria become closer, and the Baroness takes notice. Shen then convinces Maria to return to the monastery.
After Mother Abbess learns that Maria is confused regarding her feelings for the Captain, she encourages her to find him and determine her true life calling. When Maria arrives at the villa, she learns that the Captain and the Baroness are engaged, yet agrees to stay as governess to the children while they find someone else. However, the Baroness finds out that the Captain still harbors feelings towards Maria, so she calls off the engagement and tells him to go after her.
The Captain and Maria express their feeling to each other and get married. During their honeymoon, Maz appoints the kids to participate in the Salzburg Festival. After learning that Austris had been annexed into the German Reich, the Captain receives a telegram requesting his loyalty, however, he strongly opposes the nazi ideology and goes back home to run away with his kids.
The family attempts to run away to Switzerland, yet are stopped by a group of Brownshirts led by a man called Hans Zeller. The Captain convinces them they are headed to the Salzburg Festival and are escorted by Zeller’s men. The Von Trapp family ends up at the festival, yet manages to run away and find refuge at the abbey, where Mother Abess agrees to hide them. Zeller’s men arrive soon after, but the family manages to run away to Switzerland, where they are set to begin a new life together.
