Originally written by Lin-Manuel Miranda during his sophomore year in college in 1999, In The Heights was staged on Broadway in 2008. The original Broadway production of the musical won 4 out of its 13 Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical and Best Original Score. In addition, the show won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album and was nominated for the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
In The Heights is told through the perspective of Usnavi, a young man originally from the Dominican Republic. The plot follows the struggles of the members of the largely Dominican-American neighborhood of Washington Heights in New York City. Characters include the kind matriarch Abuela Claudia, Vanessa, Stanford dropout Nina Rosario, Ninas parents, and many others. The musical largely features hip-hop and Spanish-infused lyrics and a rap- and salsa- infused score.
