Based on Shepherd Meads humorous 1952 satirical instructional manual of the same name, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying features the music and lyrics of Frank Loesser. Its book was written by Abe Burrows, Jack Weinstock, and Willie Gilbert.
The musical opened in Broadways 46th Street Theatre in October 1961 and won a Pulitzer Prize and seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, in 1962. In 1967, a film adaptation of the piece was released by United Artists. It was critically acclaimed, although it was not nominated for any Academy Awards.
The musical revolves around the ambitious window washer J. Pierrepont Finch, who chances upon a book entitled How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. He decides to use the book as a guide in order to ascend the corporate ladder himself. He begins by getting a job at the World Wide Wicket Company. From the start, hes had the support of his colleague Rosemary Pilkington, who slowly starts falling in love with him and daydreaming of a life with him in the suburbs.
Over the course of the musical, Finch successfully navigates corporate life, gaining promotions while cleverly outsmarting his rival, Bud Frump, who tries to sabotage him as he climbs to the very top of the organization. One day, however, disaster strikes, and Finch finds out that his trusted manual can no longer help him. He is then forced to make important decisions using only his own smarts and his heart as guide to realizing the happy ending hes always dreamed of.
