I never basked in the glow of the high school stage, but I have fond memories of watching the performances while I was in high school.
I’ve also spoken with many people who weren’t involved in theater at all but can still, for some reason, remember the shows their schools performed.
There’s just something about the high school stage.
The school year has resumed and I can’t help but wonder what shows these high schoolers will remember fondly.
The Best High School Shows
Into the Woods
This musical was inspired by a choice selection of Brothers Grimm fairy tales. The plot centers on a baker and his wife who incur the wrath of a witch while attempting to start a family. They are cursed by the vengeful hag and the hapless couple find their fates linked with Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and Jack of Jack and the Beanstalk.
Shrek
A musical based on DreamWorks animation film. This portrays an Ogre, a most unlikely hero, and a loyal donkey who embark on a quest to rescue the beautiful Princess Fiona from a fire breathing dragon. This is not your typical Prince and Princess Fairytale by any means.
Mary Poppins
A whimsical story of the Banks Family who live in a big house in London on Cherry Tree Lane. The Banks two children are out of control and in need of a new nanny. A mysterious young woman named Mary Poppins appears at their doorstep and the family finds she is the answer to their prayers but in the most peculiar of ways.
Wizard of Oz
A true classic, young Dorothy lives on a farm in Kansas where a large tornado picks up her house and dog and deposits them in the Land of Oz. Things in Oz are definitely strange and beautiful, but Dorothy just wants to go home. In order to get home, she must go to see the Great Oz in Emerald City. In her travels to Emerald City she is helped by the good witch of the North, finds three unlikely friends and gets in deep trouble with the Wicked Witch of the East.
No matter what the show, the students are in for a magical performance and a lifetime of memories. Yes, there is just something wonderful about a High School Stage and the wonder that is created there.
